For as long as we can remember the fitness and nutrition industries have been telling us that in order to lose weight we must restrict our calorie intake and exercise to spend extra calories. Once there is a deficit, they told us, our body fat will start to decrease over time.
Makes sense right?
Well, according to the game changer study carried out by scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), this is not really how the body works.
The study conducted by the NIH found that the process is a lot more complex than that. There are a number of factors affecting a person’s ability to lose weight.
As much as exercise is critical to good health, is not an especially reliable way to keep off body fat over the long term. Plus the overly simplistic arithmetic of calories in vs. calories out weight loss concept is just misleading.

In fact, during the study it was found that some people gained more weight after following a strict exercise and diet regimen than they have lost during the diet!
The reason for this is related to our resting metabolism (how much energy your body uses when at rest).
Basically when you lose weight, your resting metabolism slows down – an evolutionary holdover from the days when food scarcity was common.
And to make matters worse, even when you gain back some of the weight you have lost, your resting metabolism is not likely to speed up along with it. The study shows that it remains low, burning about 700 fewer calories per day than it did before you started losing weight in the first place.
“The findings are very worrying as excess body fat dramatically increases the risk of serious health problems. Obesity now drives more early preventable deaths than smoking.”
Health problems including Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, depression, respiratory problems, major cancers and even fertility problems have all been linked to excess body fat. Scary stuff!
The bad news, unfortunately, doesn’t stop there!
We now also know that chemicals we are exposed to daily also play a huge part in our ability to lose weight – in order to minimise the damage these pollutants can cause, your body stores these chemicals in fat cells.

Dr. Leonardo Trasande, an expert on metabolism and associate professor of pediatrics, environmental medicine and population health at New York University’s School of Medicine says “Chemicals can disrupt hormones and metabolism, which can contribute to disease and disability.”
Things like the bisphenol A (BPA) found in linings of canned-food containers and cash-register receipts, the flame retardants in sofas and mattresses, the pesticide residues on our food and the phthalates found in plastics and cosmetics take many years for the body to expel, if ever.
“These chemicals have in common the ability to mimic human hormones, and some scientists worry they may be wreaking havoc on the delicate endocrine system, driving fat storage.”
